Q & A with Holli Thompson: Discover Your Nutritional Style

Hi There!!

So I recently had the pleasure to interview someone I admire greatly. Her name is Holli Thompson and her guidelines and teachings for a Healthy Lifestyle are ones that anyone can follow or adapt to. They'e simple, easy, and delicious. Below are some of the questions that I had for her that might help all you other mamas out there too! A little food for thought...

Kristen: I can honestly say I could not put this book down - it is so well written and the photographs are insanely beautiful. What can people expect from Discover Your Nutritional Style?

Holli: It’s been called an informative guide, a bedside reference, and also funny. I like the funny part! I believe that this way of eating is a life changer, for many people. There’s a difference between doing something like eating for your Nutritional Style some of the time, and doing it consistently. That’s the big take-a-way. I also advocate for joy, and fun, and some leeway. Stress surrounding our food isn’t healthy either!

Kristen: I firmly believe that everything and everyone comes into your life for a reason and hopefully teaches us something along the way. What’s the most important lesson you want people to take away from your new book?

Holli: That you need to take care of you. Begin there, and the rest will follow. You’re an individual, and what works for your skinny bff may not be what works best for you. Explore your own path, discover what’s unique about your body, then make it a lifestyle. That’s the key.

Kristen: On the other hand, what’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned through writing this book?

Holli: Writing DYNS allowed me to dive deeply into what I was seeing and hearing in my own practice. It forced me to hone down to what women were really saying and doing with their health; what worked and what did not. It also allowed me to address modern society’s influence on us, and how so many women are pressured to try what’s trendy, without really knowing their own body chemistry. So a huge piece of this is freedom and empowerment; I hope to empower women to forge ahead with knowledge to create their personal Nutritional Style.

Kristen: I have three young children (ages 2 through 7). How would you guide moms, like me, to easily implement good nutrition into our children’s daily lives?

Holli: I would begin with seeking out organic foods, at all costs. Pesticides, growth hormones and antibiotics used in livestock feed, are all harmful to growing children’s bodies. Emphasize fruits and vegetables, in their whole form. The rule is our house is, fresh produce at every meal. Breakfast might mean fruit in my son’s protein smoothie, or sautéed spinach or fresh salsa with his eggs. Besides that, if your child has chronic infections, or sinus/allergy issues, you might want to look at food intolerances. My book explains how to approach that topic.

Kristen: You mention in your book how “life is busy, we’re all busy”. What would you tell those who are scared to take that leap of faith - whether it be in life or with their health because they feel there is no time?

Holli: Forming a new habit takes time, but once it’s part of your lifestyle, it becomes routine. Hold onto that. In the same way that I make time to wash my hair, or go to barre class, I make time to pick up organic produce, or learn a few easy meals that will suffice a houseful of boys before I would order pizza. Try to make one change at a time, and be diligent about it. Then move on to your next.

Kristen: I’ve always believed nutrition is your best medicine. Can you explain why it’s so important that people listen to their own bodies and not just doctor’s orders?

Holli: Depending on what type of doctor you are using, they may or may not know to ask about your food. During years of suffering from inflammatory issues my doctor did not ask me what I was eating. Your food affects everything, and knowing and really getting that is the first step. I’ve seen small changes in food choices create huge improvements in health.

Kristen: I see big things happening for you - you are smart, kind, funny, but most of all relatable. I can see myself through your words and you make health & nutrition seem so accessible. What are your aspirations for this book?

Holli: I want to sell millions of copies, and reach as many people as possible. I believe the book is relatable, and attainable. My message is simple at its’ core, but requires dedication to change, in small, do-able steps. I want my book to influence and help heal. I want to alter mother’s choices, so that kids will grow up with better habits and greater knowledge. I want to give women executives and entrepreneurs more energy and balance, so that they can live happier lives.

Recent events have taught me; life is short, live it feeling as good as you possibly can. (see more)

Kristen: Who has been your biggest influence in the world of Health & Nutrition?

Holli: While I am a fan of many health influencers, I have been influenced most by my own learning. That’s the message here, learn the basics, what to avoid, (those bad boys that I outline in my book) and discover what works for you, personally, in an honest way. Influence yourself, and take care of yourself.

Nobody else knows you, like you!

Out of Sight, Out of Mind...with Food.

Have you ever heard of "out of sight, out of mind?"...well, I find the opposite is true as well. Keeping healthier food options in the line of sight will help you (and your kids) gravitate towards those versus the lingering "junk" in the closed pantry. One thing I do is keep clear glass containers on my countertop with healthier alternatives to snacks - such as lara bars, fruit & grain bars, cliff bars in one and shelled pistachios in the other. As well as a filled fruit bowl on a weekly basis - bananas, apples, oranges, etc. Lets not forget that when you have little kids its hard (and exhausting) to have fresh food constantly. So I have found certain packaged foods that I am willing to feed my family maybe as a quick snack - especially at school or on the go. My philosophy is that fast food doesn't have to be a drive-thru. Our family's fast food is a almond butter and organic strawberry preserve sandwich on wheat bread (cost virtually nothing) and maybe a portioned bag of pretzels, cheese stick, all natural fruit strip, applesauce or veggie sticks. Always with a side of fruit!

Keeping items visible and readily available allows routine in a positive way for your kids to choose the better option for a snack. And if your kids are always complaining that they're starving tell them to drink more water. Water will give your child the energy they need to motivate them to go and play, rather than sit and watch tv (while eating costant snacks). And believe me, although I once swore off tv for my oldest, I now find is necessary during dinner prep time. And again, by choosing and monitoring the proper shows they watch, they might even be educational! Nothing to kick yourself over.

On the contrary, keeping less healthy/packaged items away (maybe in a pantry or cabinet) will make the temptation of those snack items less enticing. Now remember, your first line of defense is to not even buy them. But realistically, I tried to do that for a while and then didn't want to be "that parent" who never allowed my child to make their own decisions. As they get older I try and let them choose for themselves, and then hopefully guide them in the right direction. But ultimately, we are in control.

Back to snacking....Fruit is best organic and whole, but also take note that I can take one apple and feed all three of my kids a snack. I slice it up and give them a little portion of all natural (one ingredient) almond/peanut butter to dip in. The combo is better for your metabolism anyway! As for vegetables, for some reason they're taboo in a childs world. Maybe b/c of the dull color? But I promise you, the more you try and give it to them, the more they'll take to it. Cut up carrots, cucumbers, peppers, etc. dipped in hummus or even mustard (yes, mustard) might be your kids "go-to" for a while, and thats fine. Just getting that bit of added veggie/nutrition in their diet is worth being repetitive. Try it out and let me know your tips & tricks!

Fake Out: Sweet Treats

I have mentioned before that I believe in feeding my kids the purest I can while still enabling them to enjoy food. I believe in the 80/20 rule where you eat 80% real honest food and then 20% is for the "life happens" category. I don't want my kids growing up never have tried anything - its important to test our palettes and as we all know our taste buds evolve over time. There are plenty of foods i never liked as a kid (or even a teenager) that now I love. As parents, its our job to help our kids test their palettes....and much of the time it can be a huge struggle. Don't stress. My advice would be to do your best and stick to it. It will happen and they won't be eating out of a box forever. Once you, as the adult, realize that there is no nutritional value in boxed and bagged foods you'll start to be more persistent. Kids get hungry, they're growing - so feed them! My kids aren't perfect eaters, believe me :) But I do my best to feed them with good/real food. If they're really hungry, they'll eat it!

Here are a few Fake Out Sweet Treats we have enjoyed this Summer. They're yummy & your kids will never know the difference - I promise!

Travel Food Tricks: Toddlers

So as I was packing clothes for a recent family vacation I started thinking about our grocery list of things I have to get once we get there. With that thought, I realized I always have a few staples on my list that I know will keep my kids going throughout the day and make them feel comfortable while out of their element.

Some of those travel food items include:
Organic Whole Milk
Shredded Cheese
Whole Wheat Tortillas
Chobani Kids Yogurt
Avocados
Black Beans
Bananas
Apples
Berries - Strawberries, Blueberries, Blackberries
Cheerios (Plain)
Granola
Pretzels/Goldfish
Almond Butter & All Natural Jelly
Whole Wheat Bread
Annie's Homegrown Mac & Cheese
Raisins
(All Organic, whenever possible)

Having food items that your toddler is used to having at home is key. You'll notice alot of fruit on my list which I try to make our main source of snacks throughout the day. Of course, vacation is for splurging and trying new things, but they thrive off comfort. Waking up to a simple breakfast of yogurt and granola will set the pace for a good day - say, instead of a giant donut or bagel which are certainly tend to be beach time essentials. I typically let them pick one or two days where they can pick a giant sprinkle donut - after all, it is vacation and I'm not evil!

Also, kids tend to eat a different times than adults. Its called constant snacking. With a few staples above I can easily whip up back bean quesadillas & guacamole and avoid tantrums before the adults sit down for dinner. We also typically do a fast food stop (which I'm not the biggest fan of) on the way to the beach if it falls during a meal time, but on the way home I always pack sandwiches, fruit, and pretzels to munch on - again, to avoid any drive-thru we might encounter with growling bellies. It works for me, maybe it'll work for you too!

GOTR: Mason Jar Salads

Whats on the menu for lunch today? I'm in love with these mason jars - I use them for everything from my breakfast oatmeal, to smoothies, to perfectly portioned salads. They're adorable, durable, and best of all reusable.

I don't work in an office anymore so there isn't much need to pack my lunch these days, but I am on-the-go more often than not so these perfect salads in a jar work well with my schedule. And aren't they cute? There are also so many options when it comes to salad that this makes the ideal lunch for moms and school age kids alike. A mason jar, unlike Tupperware, will seal in all of your ingredients with a spill proof affect that will keep your food in place until ready to eat.

I feel its so important to introduce salads to your children when they're young so they're more likely to eat them as they get older. The best part is - a salad can be any combination of vegetables & dressing to your liking! The options are endless and once you find your family's style and taste preferences you'll be packing them weekly. Salads are such a wonderful, and healthier, alternative to a sandwich.

Think about packing one for after school when your child is hungry before or after a sports program. Here are some of my favorite Mason Jar Salads I have found on Pinterest. They're nutritious and delicious - I encourage you and your GOTR girl to try one today! Let me know what you think!

I personally would omit the meat and always use vinaigrette dressings..just as an FYI :)

Mommy Lifesaver #2: Silicone Yogurt Tubes

You are going to LOVE me after reading this! These are my new favorite kid kitchen essential and I have no doubt I'll be purchasing more come summer time. I feel like I'm digging myself into a whole with everything I don't buy for my kids, but I honestly want them to always have the best, if possible.

I don't buy popsicles or freeze pops and don't always feel right about the yogurt tubes because they are loaded with sugar. I will purchase Go-Gurt Yogurt during summer and freeze for an easy and cool snack at the beach or pool, but they really are no nutritional value and I know that. And then I found these on one of my favorite blogs - 100 Days of Real Food -which I'm SUPER excited about! They're made by Norpro and you can find them on Amazon.

I bought a 4-Pack a few weeks ago and have been filling them with organic yogurt and freezing them for the kids - and myself. I have served frozen (like a popsicle) and have put it in the fridge or lunchbox to thaw for a cool treat later in the day. You can fill with yogurt and berries, applesauce, or even all natural juice too! I will definitely be purchasing a second set and I would certainly recommend larger families doing the same because they need to freeze overnight - perfect for hot summertime, pool, beach, & roadtrips!

These are going to be a staple in my house this Spring/Summer and I'm sure you're going to fall in love with them too!

Create your own pop treats. Easy to push up with this cleaver design. Lid holds in ingredients before they freeze and keeps pops secure in ice chest for picnics and BBQ's. Fill seal freeze and enjoy. Create treats using juices, purees, yogurt, soda, ice cream, pudding, applesauce, gelatin, fruit, berries, candies, chocolate, carmel, whipped cream and sprinkles! Set of 4. Made of flexible silicone: BPA free

Baby Food: Organic or Not?

Once you have a baby the questions on your decisions are endless - breast or bottle feed, organic or non organic, store bought or make-your-own....it can be overwhelming to say the least. When asked these questions, although I'm happy to give my opinion, I always stress to do what is best for your family. Every situation is unique and there is no reason to feel like a bad parent over it.There are plenty more opportunities for that!

With that being said, I would love to talk about baby food. Your child is introduced to solids around 4-5 months (always check with your doctor before introducing solids into your baby's diet). During this time your options are limited due to the inexperience of the baby to chew and swallow their own food. This introductory process is a learned behavior - and that's where you, the mommy, comes in. It is your job to buy or prepare the food for your child and introduce them to a variety of different fruits and vegetables to nourish them with the proper nutrients they need to thrive.

When I introduced baby food, I didn't solely make my own. Easy mashable items such as bananas, pears, avocados & sweet potatoes are super easy do on your own. But alot of making your own baby food requires straining and adding water - which is great, just time consuming. What some people don't realize is the "baby food" stage doesn't have to be very long. Usually you start around 4-5 months and you first introduce rice cereal (although I always did oatmeal b/c it was better for you and kept their tummies full longer). As soon as I can I introduce real foods - right about 6 months. Once baby gets the hang of gnawing and swallowing the food, you can move to tiny cut up table food pretty quickly. Two out of three of my kids didn't love baby food and went straight to table food - with the exception of the Pouch and Bistro Bowls (See below). Typically, I stuck mainly with organic baby food from Earth's Best or Plum Organics. They have a great line of food options which are also sold at Diapers.com and Buy Buy Baby - and always on sale!

The "Pouch" type baby food has become all the rage and I'm one of their groupies! It has been such a lifesaver for my little man (aka "baby #3"). During busy mornings or lots of on-the-go outings, the pouch has become one of the most convenient baby items to date. Plum Organics (and others such as Gerber) provide such a wide variety of nutritious options you really can't go wrong.  It enables your baby to try many different textures and flavors and even better, they can feed themselves - genius!

I'm not much of a microwave meal girl, but I have to say that these Bistro Bowls by Plum Organics are something I always have on hand for babysitters. My little one will eat just about anything my girls do but, when we're away I LOVE these Bistro Bowls for babysitters to give him. Its the perfect portion (maybe even a little more than enough) of a complete meal that is chopped up small enough so there are no choking hazards. I can leave in the evening feeling comfortable that he'll get dinner without worrying if the sitter cut the food up small enough. Its a great item to have on hand!

Once the teeth start popping through - and you'll know when that begins to happen. Sleep patterns change, drooling excessively, sometimes runny nose and fever. Some great food items to have on hand are frozen peas & carrots, blueberries, cut up bananas, diced sweet potatoes, corn, rice, and beans (love beans!). I live in terms of variety throughout the day. So I try to make sure there is at least one fruit and/or veggie with every meal.

Don't make it too hard on yourself. Kids can be picky and the best thing that you can do is provide them with the best options (i.e. most nutritional value) and you can't go wrong. There are obviously days when you can't go all organic or make my own food from scratch and that's ok - I'm certainly not 100% anything! I do my best where I can knowing that the majority of the time my kids are getting the best possible food they can. And I let the rest be.

GOTR: Pre & Post Run Snacks

Happy Tuesday!

When it comes to snacks its important to note you don't want to completely fill up on any food or drink before a run. Its actually better just to get a few bites in for quick fuel and energy and to not run on a full stomach. I believe its almost more important what you eat after your run in order to restore your energy and rebuild your muscle.

You also want to be hydrated, but that doesn't mean guzzling a glass of water immediately before your run. It really means to hydrate your body hours/days before so everything inside is running (no pun intended) properly. You need your system working well so you can run well - make sense? Steer clear of the sugary drinks which will weigh you down, stick to simple water (w/added lemon if you choose) or coconut water. I usually do a mixture of both. Coconut water still tastes so sweet to me, but I know how hydrating it is so I'll have about 4 oz each morning with my water. When you start realizing how good certain things are for you, you begin implementing them in your routine more easily. I promise.

For a pre-run snack, you will want to have one roughly 30 min prior. Keep it to a very simple meal to get you going. Don't think too much about it. The items I recommend below are staples in my house so I always know I have one or the other on hand to grab on the go. Some suggestions I have include:
  • Larabars - I can't say enough great things about these bars. They're a perfect snack throughout the day - for kids and adults. They have anywhere from one to 9 ingredients based on the flavor. Eating half is good enough for a pre-run and the other half with a banana is great for when you're done!
  • Mini Clif Bars or 1/2 a Full Size Bar - Simple ingredients with added nutrients lost during exercise.
  • Small Banana - Easiest snack suggestion of all and provides potassium which is great for balancing fluid and electrolytes in the body. Perfect for a runner!
  • Slice of Whole Wheat Toast with Almond Butter - Almonds are easier to digest than peanuts so I always go for this snack, but peanut butter works just as well! Quick and easy.
As for a post-run snack, you will want to have one within 30 min after. Carbohydrates and dairy are great additions for the added calcium and protein. Some suggestions I have include:
  • Chocolate Milk - This is recommended by many sports enthusiasts as a perfect post-workout combination. It contains carbohydrates and proteins essential during workouts and has the benefit of added calcium.
  • Greek Yogurt w/ 2 Tbsp Granola - Chobani is my go-to. Its absolutely delicious and completely filling after a good run. The granola adds texture and carbohydrates, as well as added vitamins and minerals lost during exercise.
  • Energy Bites - They are sweet (and addicting) so I would limit to two. See Related Post.
  • Fruit Smoothie - Made with greek yogurt and raw oats. Perfection!

My Favorite Snacks for Kids

Who doesn't love snacks? If you're a mom, like me, you probably have snacks coming out of your ears. All day, every day, my kids want snacks. We have them stocked in our pantry and have them always packed to go. Prepackaged snacks seem to be an essential for every mom and their starving child. When we are at home, I try and provide the best kind of snack - fruit or veggies. I try and keep the bars, pretzels, chips and crackers for our outings to the park when we're sharing with friends. The one thing I realized when trying to change my family's eating habits was its not for everyone. I couldn't go strictly organic and whole food and expect everyone to jump on board. Especially when you have a 4 year old play-date and you're serving cantaloupe and granola. Its not the end of the world to serve Goldfish and your favorite cookies at your Friday playgroup (maybe you even made them with your kids). Give the poor children what they really want- it is a play-date after all :)

I digress....back to our favorite snacks. When your kids are begging for that afternoon snack and they're lurking around your kitchen - try offering one of the following:
  • Cut up fruit & cheese-stick - Fruit is still sugar, but its the good kind :)
  • Cut up veggies & hummus - We go through so much hummus around here, but any simple dip will do.
  • Popcorn - 100 calorie packs are the best! Each kid gets their own bag and they're happy!
  • Energy Bites - a recipe I adapted from Pinterest. See below.
  • LaraBars - such a great snack choice for kids of ALL ages. I always have these on hand.
  • Trade Joes Cereal Bars or Kashi Cereal Bars - my little man loves these and they're easy on the go.

Almond Butter Energy Bites (adapted from Smashed Peas & Carrots website)
1 cup oatmeal
1/2 cup almond butter (1 ingredient. Almonds.)
1/3 cup honey
1 cup coconut flakes (unsweetened)
1/2 cup ground flaxseed
1/2 cup organic raisons
1/4 cup Cacao Nibs
1 tsp vanilla

Mix everything above in a bowl until thoroughly incorporated.  Place in the refrigerator for at least 30 min.  Once chilled, roll into small, bite-size balls and enjoy!  Store in an airtight container and keep refrigerated for up to 1 week...although they don't usually last that long in our house.

I tend to feel its that sleepy time in the afternoon kids are asking for snacks and not necessarily because they're really hungry. My kids eat a ton of fruit so offering them popcorn or a couple Energy Bites isn't out of the ordinary for me. Popcorn is also a fan favorite with my kids' friends when I don't have all of the fun junk food snacks to offer.

Enjoy a snack with your child today!

Smoothies: Your New Grab n Go!

Speaking of the most important meal of the day...Have you ever been stuck in a rut when it comes to pulling together a quick breakfast for your kids - whether at home or on the go. My answer to that is a smoothie! They can be the perfect way to start your little one's day, assuming you put all the right things in it :) What are some of your favorite fruits, veggies, additions, etc. I've been making smoothies for what seems like forever - they just used to be called protein shakes for my husband and I. When we realized we'd rather be eating our protein than drinking it, smoothies became more about added vitamins and nutrients and less about weight-loss. I make these for my kids almost everyday for either breakfast or snack.

If my three year old had her way she would eat pretzels and little gold fishes all day long, literally. The other day she actually asked me for pretzels for breakfast. I immediately said "no" and redirected her to a better option which she ended up choosing herself - a smoothie! She LOVES smoothies and even helps me gather the ingredients in our kitchen. I use a regular old blender and measure out the ingredients to let her throw in. Smoothies allow me to feel like my children are beginning their day by getting a TON of nutrition in a small meal.  You can make hundreds of different variations, but my family's guidelines to a delicious smoothie include:

Frozen Fruit - Use instead of ice for added vitamins and flavor.
Fresh Fruit - Loaded with Vitamins, Minerals, & Antioxidants.
Old Fashioned Oats - Low in Fat, High in Fiber, High in Protein.
Ground Flax Seed- Contains Essential Fatty Acids - Omega 3 & Omega 6.
Goji Powder - Noted as of of the worlds most nutrient rich foods!
Almond Milk - Low in Fat & Calories. High in Calcium. (or simply a splash of water will do)
Kids Greek Yogurt - High in Protein & Makes Rich & Creamy. (or adult size if you're making for the fam!)

(excuse my photography skills)

This may seem like alot, but it only takes a little of each ingredient to make a yummy, nutritious & quick breakfast! Plus they get to drink out of a straw which is "super cool". You make a big batch and split it between all of you - and there you have it! Maybe your husband will even take a liking to it..mine will eat anything made for him :) Enjoy!
